In September, the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists will be kicking off The TSA 2019 Annual Meeting at the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort in Lost Pines, Texas–very close to Austin. Are you all geared up? Below are a few things that we think visiting anesthesiologists should be especially excited about — both at the meeting and around the resort.

Meeting Musts:

The TSA 2019 Annual Meeting has a full and exciting schedule for all anesthesia attendees. Here are some that we are especially eager to see:

Thursday | 3:45-4:45 p.m.

Balance Billing: Leading the Effort for Preserving Access and the Market While Getting Patients Out of the Middle

Moderator: Sherif Z. Zaafran, MD, FASA

The Honorable Kelly Hancock

The Honorable John Whitmire

The Honorable Eddie Lucio, III

The Honorable Trey Martinez Fischer

The Honorable Tom J. Oliverson, MD

In June, Dr. Zaafran published a testimony stating, “We believe protecting patients by eliminating balance billing and ensuring patients pay no more than their in-network cost-sharing is the right thing to do.” We’re very interested to hear what the group has to say about balance billing for unanticipated out-of-network anesthesia care, patient protections, fair reimbursement, greater network adequacy standards, and improved transparency

for all patients.

If you’re interested in reading his testimony ahead of time, you can see it here: Dr. Zaafran (Physicians for Fair Coverage) Testimony

Friday | 8:00-8:45 a.m.

The Forgotten: The Antithesis of the Opioid Epidemic

Presenter: Enas S. Kandil, MD, MSc

This one is likely to be well attended for a couple of reasons. Not only does it qualify for Ethics and/or Professional Responsibility Education topics AND MOCA & MOCA 2.0, but it also has, in our humble opinion, the most intriguing title in the TSA 2019 lineup.

That said, we consider Dr. Kandil one of the utmost subject matter experts on the opioid epidemic. Among other accomplishments, she “conduct[ed] a small randomized-controlled clinical trial, which [she has] now completed (manuscript in preparation), where [she] demonstrated that operative opioid use was associated with a marked prolongation of postoperative recovery, and that the use of wake promoting agents such as Nuvigil is safe in the perioperative setting.” Read more about her here.

Before attending TSA 2019 and this session, we highly recommend reading Dr. Kandil’s article, Combating the Opioid Epidemic: The UT Southwestern and Parkland Health Care System Experience (click to read).

Saturday | 8:00-8:45 a.m.

Physician Burnout in 2019 – Is It Real?

Presenter: John S. Scott, Jr, DO, MHA, FASA

A discussion around “physician burnout” along with “emotional exhaustion,” “depersonalization,” “cynicism,” and “job dissatisfaction” has dramatically picked up speed and attention in the course of the last couple of years. In 2019, opinions from all parts of a spectrum of beliefs have surfaced. This session will surely be invaluable as the discussion continues among anesthesiologists.

A fantastic article, Burnout, Drop Out, Suicide: Physician Loss in Emergency Medicine, Part I, was published earlier in 2019, and it would be a phenomenal preparatory read.

Sunday | 8:00-8:45 a.m.

Jehovah’s Witness Patient: Management In 2019

Presenter: Sonal N. Zambare, MD

According to this article on the Jehovah’s Witnesses’ website, the denomination universally believes several treatments (like blood transfusions and others) are contrary to Biblical teachings. However, the issue of patient management becomes more complex for the anesthesiologist when presented with the idea that “personal choice is involved. One Witness might decide to accept a particular medicine or treatment, while another Witness might reject that same treatment.

Navigating these waters may be much easier after this session with Dr. Zambare, who was part of a Patient Safety Committee whose explanation of safe Tranexamic Acid Administration can be read about here.
